It really freaks me out to see a series of pictures of one person where they make the same smile face in every picture. Like they're wax figures or something.
Creepy.

Ever since Halloween, when I went through those journals when Lang and I were drinking, I haven't been able to get able to get out of the past. I've gone through all 5 years of posts here, and now I'm starting to type up the journal entries from my paper journals before they are lost to the ages... 10 years worth of sporadic writing.

Found an amazing story that I began writing in 2005.

I should be asleep right now.

Was looking through Kevin's journal. A bit of narcissism, really, wondering if there was anything about me in there from when he and I were... what were we? We never dated, we never did anything, I don't know. Anyways. One of the comments was about me having had more than 15 boyfriends and that was skeezy. Hadn't really thought about it like that.
Chad, when I was 13, John when I was 14, Richard at 15, Justin at 17, Ray at 18, Ken briefly at 20, Chris briefly at 20, Josh at 20, Christian at 22? Then Jan. Nine total relationships that were worth anything. In 12 years of dating, that seems reasonable. And really, everything before Ray seems so ridiculously long ago and shallow. Not because of them or anything, but just because we were so.. young?
I guess I'm old.

I really need to go to bed. Need to pack tomorrow. Packing important.

I hope I put my underwear in the washer.

lapidary treasures, squee!

While I was travelling down from Thunder Bay this September, I insisted that we stop at Burnie's Rock Shop in Madison because, clearly, there wasn't enough lapidary in this trip already. And so I absconded from that marvel of a store with some tiny trilobites, a pearlized ammonite and some minerals disguised as platonic solids. A pleasing little treasure trove to fit in my pocket.

The trilobites at least (and maybe the nautilid too) are destined to become a brooch for the trilobite beret [rav], which is easily my most favorite hat of the year. It was almost entirely knit on that same trip. Softsoftsoft Malabrigo and slate and fossils and how could it go wrong? The trouble is . . . what with being a beret and not a beanie, the trilobite motif is even harder to spot. Maybe some extra visual aides will help. That's the plan anyways.

My plans for the fluorite octahedron and the pyrite dodecahedrons are to have them hanging around, being pretty. They are well suited for that purpose as you can see.

Jan was over for the weekend. Eh.

Seem to have a pinched sciatic nerve. Fun! Laying down, trying to relax, blah, blah, blah. Guess I should start wearing my orthotics at work.

Can't wait to get to Severn. The hours haven't been long at work, but the constant, every-day thing is driving me nuts. Totally getting away from crap up there is always good for me.

I wonder what'll happen to that place in January. The lease is up soon and I don't think Ray can do it on his own. He may have to move... I'll miss that place.

In the last couple of weeks I've been reading some steampunk books.

First was <http://www.amazon.com/boneshaker-sci-fi-essential-books/dp/0765318415">Boneshaker</a>, written by [info]cmpriest, who we've been following since before her first book was published. Her writing style is very narrative, and feels more like you are reading about something as it is happening than you are reading a story (if that makes sense).

The novel is a steampunk story set in Seattle during the American Civil War, where a catastrophe destroys the center of the city and causes this smog to kill and reanimate anyone who breathes it, turning them into... well, they aren't called zombies, and the description of them is pretty excellent. Anyway, good book, interesting style.

Currently is The Translated Man, a self-published "police procedural" set in its own universe. The writing style is a trifle rough (to be expected), but in general it's an enjoyable book. The book itself is more about the crime story than it is setting the reality of the universe, where technology is discussed in passing, and it is left to the reader to figure out whether they believe it. It's actually an effective tool, as by not trying to sell the concept, it makes it more reasonable to think that it is happening.

1. I need to find places to play in New Mexico and Arizona for late January and early February next year. Any and all suggestions are welcome, since I've not yet performed in either state.

Couple things:
-I do not do shows in bars. I would much rather rent a UU church or play a house concert. Bookstores are ok too. Coffee shops are my last resort. Bookstores with coffee shops in them are ok--if they're anything like SoulFood, so much the better.
-Ten people is more than enough audience, 20 even better--especially since I've never performed in NM or AZ before.

Please please please please comment, most especially if you would like a house concert of your very own.
K and I are planning to be in New Mexico from January 28-31. After our Grand Canyon birthday trip, we want to find shows in Arizona from February 5-9.

2. We're planning to be at Pantheacon in SF on Feb. 12-15, but they haven't yet let us know whether or not they say yes to our concert proposal with Sharon Knight. Since we get to go to Consonance with Tricky Pixie on March 5-7, we're going to stay in California for almost a month. California fans and friends, please let us know if you'd like us to visit or try to get a show together where you are. Borderlands in SF and their gorgeous new cafe and the Pasadena public library are both strong possibilities, and I'm going to look into the Goddess Temple of Orange County, also. Again, I'd love to do some house concerts in CA, or find good listening rooms in which to sing to fans and friends. Also, I'll celebrate my actual birthday while we're in CA. Want to help me have a happy birthday? Help me book some shows! :D

Srsly, you guys make all of this easier on me. I can't tell you how many times a suggestion from a friend has turned into an amazing concert for everyone. Please comment on any of this if you have any suggestions or recommendations. Thanks.

Over at The Digital Standard, Chris Pogue has written an excellent example of how fuzzy hashing can be used in computer forensics. Thanks Chris, and have fun with fuzzy hashing!

My own little bubble of Ye Olden Worlde is slowly expanding to encompass all things. Even post apocalyptic dystopian near-futures. Awesome. Except for the "period blackface," which I could do without.

But I can't remember who.

In any case: The majority of jobs (about two-thirds) are created by small young companies. "Kauffman's analysis of U.S. Census Bureau data [shows] that companies less than five years old created nearly two-thirds of net new jobs in 2007."
