On precisely what happens...

...when one spends an afternoon & evening with nameless_abyss.

  1. One acquires a sea goddess dress for the Terpischorean Ball in May at the University of Maryland.
  2. One samples the delights that Godiva can offer in the form of ginger chocolate and key lime truffles.
  3. One wanders adoringly through Illuminations, glorying in the many splendors of candlelight.
  4. One makes a quick pillaging of Hot Topic, emerging with Labyrinth booty: one tank-top and 3 post cards. (Oh, bless thee, Hot Topic - Source of Labyrinth paraphernalia both wearable and hangable!)
  5. One procures shiny pearl adornments for both hair and ear.
  6. One conquers the night-time twists and turns of vaguely familiar territory in order to catch an evening showing of Take the Lead, which leads to frissons of ecstacy at the beauty of the dancing that the movie contains. Hurrah for movies about dancing that involve actors who can really dance.

And lo! jalenstrix looked at her evening and said: This is very good.

[grin] I'll admit, Take the Lead isn't so much on the Great and Unexpected Plot (TM). But it's a lovely feel-good dance movie and, good lord, can these people dance. I was making little delighted comments in the theater ("Ooh, look at that continuous pivot sequence!" "Oh oh oh! Those shadow walks in the tango - squee!"), much to the certain chagrine of the other movie-goers.

As for Florifornias, I'll completely believe you on that since I've never heard of such things. But given that they're apparently comparable to key lime truffles, which are absolutely divine, I highly approve of them on principle. ;)

There have been a bunch of good dance movies in the last decade. I particularly liked Shall We Dance (The Japanese version ... I still haven't seen the American), Mad Hot Ballroom, The Tango Dancer.

Here is my recipe for Florifornias. Like many things, especially with chocolate, the quality of the chocolate you use makes a big difference.

Florifornia

Ingredients:

8 oz white chocolate
1/2 cup cream
2 oranges
1 lemon
1 lime

Directions:

1) Melt the white chocolate. Stir frequently to prevent scorching.

2) Zest two oranges, 1 lemon, and 1/2 the lime directly into a small saucepan. Try to capture all the spraying oils from the skins in the pan. The oil from the citrus rind is the source of all the flavors.

3) Add the cream and swirl the pan gently so that the cream dissolves any oil left on the side of the pan from the spraying fruit you zested. Slowly bring to a simmer, hold at one minute, then let the cream steep in zest for 10 minutes.

4) Pout cream /zest into small bowl through a fine sieve. No zest should pass through the sieve. Use the back of a tablespoon to gently press the mass of soggy zest into the side of the sieve to squeeze out the buld of the flavored cream.

5) Add the melted chocolate to the cream and slowly whisk the mixture until smooth and homogeneous.

6) Cover with plastic wrap and refrigerate until set (about an hour or so).

7) Ball into 3/4 inch spheres.

8) Melt 1/2 of white dipping couverture. Optionally, add 3/4 of toasted sliced almonds that have been slightly crushed with a rolling pin to about the size of corn kernals. Mix into the tempered chocolate for a nubble effect.

9) Dip.

Enjoy!

:-)

I'ld offer to make some to giveto you when I swing up to DC in July, but I'm uncertain how much prep time I'll have before flying north.

Splendid! Thanks for the recipe and the if-only-there-were-sufficient-prep-time offer to bring some when you swing up to DC. :)

::laughs::

I just realized there were some awful typos in the recipe I typed up for you. For instance ... in step 8, you need to melt a 1/2 pound of couverture.

And I'm not saying there won't be time, but I didn't want to get your hopes up in case I couldn't prep them in time. Besides, you may not even be in town the week I'm up there ....
