There...

...is something truly invigorating about giving a nicely inflammatory linguistics presentation to very clever people in the department, followed by an exceptional discussion with one of the attending faculty afterwards. So pleased am I. At times like this, I rather think I could handle being in academia, if more of my experience consisted of this.

And in the back of my head, a little voice is shouting, I am victorious! Weeeeeee!

Go, go, Gadget-thesis-work.

Heh. I understand the feeling: directly going against a prof's theory and pulling it off feels very nice. What was it that you were talking about?

;) It wasn't going against anyone in the department, but against some work that claims parsing is the way to learn (Sakas & Fodor up at CUNY). And to be fair, it didn't really go against them, but said parsing just didn't do as well as learning with more heuristic-like cues. (The domain was metrical phonology, as opposed to syntax.)

Nonetheless, much much debate arose among the attending faculty, so I was very pleased.
