Finely Strung Like a Lute

Finely strung like a lute, he was,
and I had beginner’s luck trying to play,
the simple melody falling out with my fingers.

But beginner’s luck can only take you so far,
and my fingers began to pluck out of tune,
unsure of what vibration would catch my melody again.
Until the strings broke,
popping under pressure,
and I hadn’t the way to smooth them down,
hadn’t a way to cover the broken edges.

But I tried, anyway,
tried so hard till my fingers bled,
cut along the popped wire edges-
but the melody wouldn’t come,
only jangled notes and un-harmony.

So I withdrew.

But I still remember the melody,
even as my fingers remember their blood.
